HD cable tv, view difference between 720/1080?
i was told at best buy that the “HD” channels through cable or satellite are only pushing a 480 signal as of right now(most, but some vary higher or lower depending on channel) and that on a quality plasma(looking at Samsung), you cannot see a difference in the HD cable/satellite between a 720 and a 1080 Hdtv because both are well over what the channels are pushing (as of now). is this true?
the samsung we were looking at is a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast, 16:9 aspect ratio, and 1365×768 resolution. model number PN50B450
seems like everything except for 1080p, but no blue-ray for me, and not into gaming. just watch football on tv and motorcycle races with the occasional comedy movie. not in to much else.
480i is for standard, non-HD stations. A very few digital stations are using 480p but this isn’t a standard. Meanwhile, the vast majority of HD programming available right now is in 720p with a few stations using 1080i. Anything below 720p is not in HD, period. HD is only 720p, 1080i, or 1080p.
Which ever TV you buy, it will rescale any incoming signal to its native resolution. This means if your TV supports 1080i, everything gets scaled up to 1080i.
Some systems off on-demand movies which may claim to be in HD. However, these systems use highly compressed video streams, so while they maybe in 1080p, the video quality itself won’t compare to what you see on a “live” station at 720p, much less what you can get from a blu-ray movie.
Since the only source for true, native 1080p video is blu-ray – and you don’t care about that – the TV you’re looking at should be more than sufficient for your needs. Even if you later decide to get a blu-ray player, it’ll still deliver a superior picture on your TV when compared to a regular DVD, or anything you get off Cable/Satellite. Most video games are currently in 720p.
